The Board of Directors is responsible for the overall policy and operations of the Corporation. The members have the authority to make final determinations on all major policies, review policy and sanction proceedings, budgetary matters, and other significant activities related to the ongoing operations of the Corporation.

General Information About the CCME Board of Directors

Number of Members: Up to 24 voting members with the goals of maintaining diversity via a ratio of 1 physician: 1 non-physician member and to adequately represent a bistate, geographic region.

Length of Terms: Five physician members are elected by the CCME membership to 3-year terms; the remaining members are appointed to 1-year terms.

Cap on Service: Generally six consecutive years, but up to three members may serve nine consecutive years.

Dates Appointments Made: Closely coincides with the CCME Annual Meeting in November and at other times when a vacancy occurs.

Percent of Board Appointed Each Year: Up to 19 members are appointed each year. The Board staggers the terms of its members so that no more than one-third reaches the six-year maximum in any given year.

Compensation: Current policy allows reimbursement at $100 per hour up to a $500 meeting maximum.

Limitations on Service:

  • Employees of CCME are not eligible to serve on the Board.
  • At least two-thirds must be independent members, i.e., do not receive compensation from CCME for non-Board related services and must not have received such compensation for at least 12 months prior to appointment.
  • No more that 20 percent of the members can be affiliated with a provider who receives payments under the Medicare Program.
  • No more than 20 percent of the members can be affiliated with a payor organization that makes payments under the Medicare Program.
  • No more than 50 percent of the members can represent any one particular professional area, e.g., physicians, lawyers, statisticians, etc.

Timothy S. Llewelyn, MD, Vice-President
Reappointed to a one-year term in 2011, Dr. Llewelyn practices internal medicine in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Roger A. Gaddy, MD, Treasurer
Appointed to a one-year term in 2011, Dr. Gaddy practices family medicine in Winnsboro, South Carolina.

Marilyn J. Schaffner, PhD, RN, CGRN, Secretary
Reappointed to a one-year term in 2011, Dr. Schaffner is the Administrator for Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive at the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center located in Charleston, South Carolina.

Daniel T. Lackland, DrPH – At-Large Member of Executive Committee
Reappointed to a one-year term in 2011, Dr. Lackland is a Professor of Epidemiology and Director of Graduate Training and Education in the Department of Biometry and Epidemiology at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Thelma C. Lennon – At Large Member of the Executive Committee
Reappointed to a one-year term in 2011, Ms. Lennon is a retired professional with the NC Board of Education living in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Charles T. Frock
Re-appointed to one -year term in 2011, Mr. Frock has recently retired as the Chief Executive Officer of First Health of the Carolinas located in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

D. John Godehn, Jr., MD
District I (Western North Carolina)

Elected to a three-year term on the CCME Board in 2009, Dr. Godehn practices dermatology in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Vanessa Haygood, MD
DISTRICT II (North Central North Carolina)

Elected to a three-year term on the CCME Board in 2009, Dr. Haygood practices obstetrics and gynecology in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Betty R. McCain
Reappointed to a one-year term in 2011, Ms. McCain is a former Secretary of Cultural Resources in North Carolina who currently resides in Wilson, North Carolina.

William D. Smith
Reappointed to a one-year term in 2011, Mr. Smith is a retired engineer currently living in Columbia, South Carolina.

Henry C. Thomason, Jr., MD
DISTRICT III (South Central North Carolina)

Elected to a three-year term on the CCME Board in 2011, Dr. Thomason practices cardiology in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Reappointed to a one-year term in 2011, Mr. Walters is the President of Piedmont Health Coalition, Inc. located in Burlington, NC.
